With the recent premiere of Space Jam: A New Legacy movie, Sotheby’s auction house will be putting a rare Space Jam sneaker up for auction. The announcement of the auction comes after recent new collections dropped by both Nike and Converse to celebrate the movie as well.
The Michael Jordan’s player sample of the Air Jordan 11 “Space Jam” is one of the rarest Air Jordans in the world, as only a small number of them were created for the widely successful 1996 Space Jam and are now in private collections. This particular pair will be up for auction until July 25, and are expected to fetch between $150,000 to $200,000 USD.
This original Air Jordan 11 “Space Jam” is one of the most sought after Air Jordans, as it is a unique “Player Sample”, meaning it was specially made only for the legendary NBA player to wear in the original Space Jam film. The 1996 film starred Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny, other NBA superstars, and Warner Bros. animated characters. However, the sneakers are in deadstock, pristine condition and were never worn.
The AJ11s sport a mostly black colorway with white midsoles and a gum colored outsole. Purple Jumpman logos can be found on the tongue tag and heels. This specific colorway was produced in 1995 only for Michael Jordan, and was not sold in retail stores, making it even more coveted by collectors. They were designed by Nike designer Tinker Hatfield to suit Michael’s movements during gameplay but sports patent leather uppers to allow him to wear them with a suit.
These super rare shoes are signed by the player in silver ink on the toebox and come in Jordan’s size 13 in a custom velvet and wooden box with a laser-etched Tune Squad logo. Initially released in 1996, the Air Jordan 11 “Space Jam” is one that is rich with history and will be one that collectors will be scrambling for. These legendary kicks are available in a single-lot online auction called “MJ’s Secret Stuff | The Space Jam Jordans” on Sotheby’s.
