Interviews

Camille Lumogdang
August 10, 2022

Riblets @riblets1218 is a New Balance fan whose love for the brand was sparked by the brown JJJJound 992. Apart from sneakers, he is also collecting antique stuff because his love for vintage items and its history.

What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

I've always collected shoes and random sneakers growing up. When I got the brown JJJJound 992 in hand, it sparked my love for New Balance as a brand. I remember the thing that directed me towards New Balance was that it is an IFYKYK brand with amazing attention to detail and superior materials. Given the fact that the normal person would just see a brown pair of New Balance, the collectors would know what they were really exciting for me.

What’s one moment or trend in the history of sneaker culture that resonates with you?

Vintage items. I have always been fascinated with antiques, older pictures, little trinkets, and many more. My entire house is full of random antiques I have found and collected over the years. For me, antiques have a story and commemorate a time in history when it was relative. Tying that into vintage sneakers just adds a beautiful experience and brings back all this nostalgia.

Please describe how it feels to you when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

When I finally get the shoes I have been eyeing for a long time; I become like a kid on Christmas. I can usually tell if I love a pair or not by whether feeling comfortable wearing it within the first week or so of purchasing it. The Higher Learning Pack by Yue Wu was the last pair of shoes I received that I couldn't stop wearing.

What are some of your favorite creators/designers or brands and why?

My favorite brands are Aimé Leon Dore, JJJJound, Patta, and A Ma Maniere. For me, ALD has the best process in terms of releases for their fans with a loyalty program. It feels like my business is appreciated, which is important to me as a consumer when I'm spending the kind of money I am on their product.

I really enjoy other brands, like JJJJound, because of the simplicity of their designs. Then finally, Patta, I feel like their business is for the community. Every release they had recently has been an excellent experience for me and has helped to get pairs into the hands of collectors within the community.

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

Seeing Evolve Clothing get a collab with NB would be dope. Their business is 100% for the New Balance community, and the owner is one of the kindest and humblest people I have had the pleasure of speaking with.

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

The pairs I probably wear the most in my collection are my JJJJound 992, Aimé Leon Dore 550s, Patta AM1 'Monarch', Eames x Reebok Club C, Nike Dunk Low Curry, and the Black Fig 2002R from the Higher Learning Pack.

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not managed to acquire so far?

I would love to own a pair of brown JJJJound 990v3 and ALD AF1.

Other than kicks, what are some of your daily essentials or treasured items?

I'm pretty simple, to be honest. I try to carry the bare minimum when going out. My treasures would have to be just some old antiques I have found over the years.
