Interviews

Fatin @fatinsyahirahroszizi ignored her fashion until she started skating, and she has always loved Vans. A great pair of sneakers boost her confidence when skating, and she wants to get a Vans model from Japan as it's hard to get ones in Malaysia!

What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

Growing up, I had no interest in fashion, including shoes. I would wear whatever fits from my sister's wardrobe. Mainly because I had no money ūüėā

So since I started skating, I've always loved Vans.

What’s one moment or trend in the history of sneaker culture that resonates with you?

That time when Vans launched Pa'dins pro model was crazy! People lining up early to cop a few pairs got me thinking, "What's the big deal?"

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

All Vans! I wouldn't label myself a collector, but I no longer have space for more sneakers ūüėÖūüė≠

Please describe how it feels to you when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

I really like the clean look! Fresh and crispy ūü•ļ

Skating a new pair can either make me feel like a better skater or a really dumb one, depending on whether I like it or not!

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

Imagine if a shoe brand collabs with a cereal brand! They could make a cute design!

What are some of your favorite creators/designers or brands and why?

I don't know many of them, but Sandy Bodecker has contributed a lot to skateboarding. He gave out ideas and brought Nike SB to life. That's definitely something not everyone can do!

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not managed to acquire so far?

I would say the Vans models from Japan. Not much of it is brought into Malaysia, so it's hard to get my hands on one.

Other than kicks, what are some of your daily essentials or treasured items?

CAPS/HATS! I started wearing them over my hijab in 2018, and now I would feel incomplete without one. It's easier to manage. My hijab won't move around, especially during skating!
