Filipino Sneakerhead and Sneaker Photographer: Duk Maniquis

Interviews

Camille Lumogdang
September 6, 2022

Duk Maniquis @dukmaniquis is a Filipino sneaker photographer who always shoots his new pair after unboxing them. He loves to shoot any sneakers with minimalist designs, whether it's Air Jordan, Adidas, or Yeezy.

What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

I admired sneakers even when I was still a kid, but I started collecting my pairs after joining a sneaker group on one of the social media platforms. Fell in love with the "Chicago" colorway, actually, but I saw a 2016 Air Jordan 1 High "Bred" for a fair price then.

What’s one moment or trend in the history of sneaker culture that resonates with you?

I'm kind of a late bloomer when it comes to sneaker culture/fashion, but it was the time when the Air Jordan 1 High hype resonated with me. It's different when you see a classic pair and colorway up close.

Please describe how it feels to you when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

The excitement when you're about to do that sniff test upon opening the box first, lol! Plus, I love taking pictures of my sneakers, which also adds to the thrill.

What are some of your favorite creators/designers or brands and why?

I love what Uniqlo x Kaws did with their collaboration. Prints are there but still look minimalist to my eyes. If that makes sense, the eyes go back to the shoes you're wearing.

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

To be honest, I'm overwhelmed with collaborations right now. I couldn't think of anything, LOL.

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

Most of the shoes in my rotation are the Air Jordan 1 Highs, 2015 Chicago, 2016 Bred and SBB 2.0, Top 3, and 2017 Wheat. I also got one Jordan 5 Fire Red, which is a beauty. And a couple of low-top sneakers.

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not managed to acquire so far?

My grail pair is the one I have right now, the Chicago 1s. I'm not trying to acquire one, but a 1985 pair would be dope! I will probably spam my IG feed with that pair for a month!

Other than kicks, what are some of your daily essentials or treasured items?

None as of now.
