Jethro Ferrer - Filipino Photographer Interview

Interviews

Jethro @saint.emilio_ was one of the kids who was heavily influenced by the Janoski's, Roshe Runs, and Supra's era but he couldn't cop a pair during that time. Fortunately, it didn't stop his love for sneakers and clothes!

What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

My interest in fashion started in high school. Growing up in a province in the Philippines, I was not aware of the hottest sneakers out there until I moved out to the city when I was 15. And that's where I was influenced heavily by my sense of style.

Before that, I was always a hip-hop, dance, skating, and visual arts fan. When I say visual arts, I mean fashion editorials, either online or print. So, when I moved to Metro Manila, I got an understanding of what these brands were, their history, the different "colorways", models/silhouettes, etc.

What really got me into sneakers and clothes, in general, was when I wanted a pair of Janoski's, Roshe Runs, and Supra's when they were really hyped. Not only were they really cool, but I really wanted to skate a pair of Janoski's and Supra's back in high school.

Unfortunately, I never got a pair because I didn't really have anything else but lunch money for school.

What’s one moment or trend in the history of sneaker culture that resonates with you?

Definitely when Supra's came out, that was a core memory for me. This was when everyone had Vaders and TKs on. Lil Wayne had Supras, Soulja Boy, JB.

All these big names were all over Tumblr and Twitter. So, that brand greatly influenced on who and what I like today.

Please describe how it feels to you when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

It's euphoric. Growing up, I didn't have much since my family could only provide the basic necessities for us.

Now that I'm older and earn my own money, I get to fulfill the joys I've always longed for when I was younger.

What are some of your favorite creators/designers or brands and why?

Definitely Rick Owens, Raf Simons, Teddy Santis, Demna of Balenciaga, Issey Miyake, Jun Takahashi, Nigo, Tetsu Nishiyama, Keizo Shimizu (Needles), etc.

Most of the brands I mentioned are Japanese designers, and most, if not all, of their pieces, don't fit me unfortunately, since I'm a pretty big guy. I just really appreciate their work and their brand. I love looking at proportions and colors. It inspires me and helps me build an outfit for myself.

I recently invested in two Raf pieces that I'm pleased with.

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

Hmmmm this is a hard one.

At this point, I feel like all brands have collaborated with each other in this day and age. I'd like to stay quiet on this before I make a fool of myself (LOL.)

But, I want to say the most recent sneakers that caught my eye were definitely the New Balance "MADE in the USA" season 1 and 2 collections they did with Teddy Santis. The colorways are just so relaxing to look at!

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

My current rotation right now are my Samba's, NB 990's V3, Undercover Clarks, Salomon Xt4's, Vans Vaults and Chuck 70's (super comfy.)

I like to keep it pretty simple recently since I'm mostly just working now. So, when I'm out, I just love to throw my favorite comfy pairs on and just go on with my day. I wear my other pairs, like my Jordans, only on special occasions.

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not managed to acquire so far?

Probably a pair of Mainline Ramones from Rick Owens. I just can't find a pair for myself in my size, it sucks!

To whoever is reading this, if you have a 12-12.5 US, 46 EU Mainline Ramones, hit me up 👍

Or some Color block Weejun's (Black/White), I need those in my rotation for sure!

What are some of your daily essentials or treasured items besides kicks?

I guess my collection of outerwear!

I acquired and collected a small collection of vintage or thrifted apparel/outerwear during the pandemic, but, my favorite in my rotation right now are my Eisenhower Dickies Jackets. I use them to shop at the mall, go grocery, or meet up with friends. It's just a flexible piece of outerwear that goes with anything, in my opinion.

I also have button-down shirts from Fortune WWD, a local Filipino brand, and many shirts from Uniqlo that are definitely essentials for me since it's pretty humid in the Philippines.

Can't forget the bottoms! Since I'm pretty big in the dimes, these brands have definitely been essentials for me, since they have big sizes. To name a few: Dickies Denim jeans, Dickies 874 work pants, Carhartt double knees, some gartered sweatpants, and definitely shorts.

Another essential, I guess are some sunglasses and a hat when I go out because it gets really hot sometimes. Last but not least, accessories are also essential, like my Alyx chain and some regular silver/stainless rings. I can't leave the house without them.

Oh yeah, can't forget about the scents! Need to smell great when going out. If you want to know, I use Matcha 26 by Le Labo or Eau de Minthé by Diptyque. I highly recommend it!

And that's pretty much it. Nothing too crazy.
