I have been drawn to sneakers since I was a kid, aka "rubber shoes," back in the day; I always buy a fresh pair before school starts. My interest grew more prominent when my sister's boyfriend (now my bro-in-law) let me use his CB34s (Charles Barkley's NIKE signature basketball shoes) back in 95-96.
But, what triggered my obsession with sneakers was when I got introduced to the Nike SB Dunks and Janoski's, which was around 2011. The rest is history.
The time when trainers/runners were the thing! I got hooked after buying my first pair of Asics, the GL3 Red Kimonos. I got obsessed with the brand and the model that, at some point, I had like 60 pairs of Gel Lyte 3s!
But, it broke my heart because a few years ago, I realized that some materials used on these runners are not so "tropical country" friendly, especially my Diadoras, which I had to let go of as some of the midsoles of my older pairs started to crumble. The upper materials started to grow molds.
I got sad because I tried to quit the game. I explored other hobbies to fill in the missing void. It was late last year that I realized that first love never dies, and now I'm back in the game.
There are no specific pairs that I am obsessed with. I wear what I like.
My current rotation is mostly Nike SBs like WTP, Parra, Street Hawker, and eBay Sandy. Some Airmax 1’s and Airmax 90's, such as Hemps, Sketch to Self, Fried Chicken, and Bacon.
Of course, it also includes a pair where it all started, my runners such as Sneakerlah x Asics Gel Kayano 5 OG "Nasi Lemak," Afew x Hummel Marathon "Stay Foolish," and Patta x New Balance 990 'Olive.'
It’s indescribable. The happiness is unexplainable from the moment you open the box to wearing them. It does not always have to be the hyped ones; it’s the thrill and excitement cop after the cop.
My collection of sneakers is very colorful and bright. The one that needs to be added is a collaboration between Nike Dunk SB and Takashi Murakami. If that ever happens, it’s the best of both worlds for me.
Ronnie Fieg is the man. I love the whole concept behind all KITH collaborations with ASICS. The material mix is well thought out, and the color blocking is beyond imaginable. Every pair is a masterpiece.
The most complicated question for every sneaker collector. I have two in mind now: Patta x Asics Gel Lyte 3 Amsterdam and Afew x Diadora v7000 "The Cure."
I am not sure if I can find these two pairs. Firstly, it's Patta's first collaboration project, released in 2007. However, I am still optimistic about "The Cure" since they were only released in 2017, although there were only 50 pairs produced and were exclusive to BEAMS Japan.
My old phone, small leather wallet, two bracelets, watch and of course my wedding ring. I feel naked without them.
