I was in college when I got my first pair of Jordan 1. The funny story is I’ve mistakenly thought of them as SB dunks. It was Christmas time, I was looking for dunk highs because they were popular back in 2009. then I picked up the Jordan 1 Strap Grand Purple which I still have it to this day!
The first time I saw MJ rock the Jordan 1s, I knew those shoes were going to be a cult favorite - yet I didn’t buy any J’s after 2010. It was not until 2016 that I got into it again. I was just scrolling through Facebook and came across a picture of the Jordan 1 Chameleon, sadly(as usual) it was already sold out.
The first Jordan 1 I got after my hiatus was the jordan 1 Storm Blue, which everyone was sleeping on but I got them for 50% off retail! I’ve stuck with the Jordans 1 because it's the first sneaker that I enjoyed wearing. It's a classic silhouette that can be dressed up or worn casually, plus the different colorways and color blockings keep the sneaker fresh. It’s a sneaker that everyone recognizes, even my dad respects it! Plus the legacy and the stories behind every iteration are something exciting to discover.
I wouldn’t call myself a collector. For me, buying sneakers is an outlet to celebrate small wins and even life achievements adding my own legacy/story behind every pair. And what better way to brag about your achievements than to wear them?
To sum it all up: “Feels like a kid with a new toy at Christmas! You can’t sleep and you are excited to wear them even if you got no place to go.
To be honest, it’s a fulfilling experience once you get them, especially if it’s a grail sneaker that took you some time and effort to hunt. Plus, knowing the fact that you deserve every bit of it because you know you worked hard for it.
I have to mention Jerry Lorenzo, Kanye, and Erlson Hue they really push the boundaries of design. Each one paves the way for its own styles and moods.
To be honest I can’t think of any. But what I would wish for is to get Jerry Lorenzo back to Nike. Those FOG1 need a follow-up. The acronym prestos need more colorways! Speaking off, maybe techwear brands? That’s also one style I’d like to explore.
For this year, I streamed line my collection & finally practiced minimalism (of some sort) and stuck with Jordan 1s to create my signature look. It’s also to challenge my creativity and to prove a point, styles come inherent to you no matter what you wear.
I love most of the weird colorways for Js, to name some in my collection: prototype, brotherhood, bio hack & wings. Also, I have some classic colorways like reverse shattered backboard, shadows & bred toes which are all essentials to me.
I’ve got a couple! The Jordan 1 Union 'Black Toes', Jordan 5 Off White 'Black CW' & Jordan 4 Kaws 'Cool Grey'. Yes, they’re hype but are unique in a sense for starting trends. Also, I'm planning on collecting all the 85’ Cut 1’s & Shattered Backboard color blocking CW if I get lucky.
My collection of Fear of God sweatpants, some may copy its style, but nothing beats them. Also my favorite local streetwear brand here in the Philippines, DBTK! I’m an avid fan of the brand as I associated it with childhood memories(the store is located near our place before).
