Leah Poulian - Australian Sneakerhead Interview

What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

The moment I got drawn into sneakers was back in high school, around year 8 or 9. I remember scrolling through Tumblr and seeing a really cool pair of Nike Air Max 90s in all black with croc detail. Immediately I fell in love with them and knew I had to grab a pair!

Ever since buying those sneakers, it opened up a whole new world for me. I was so excited to find the next coolest pair to add to my wardrobe.

What’s one moment or trend in the history of sneaker culture that resonates with you?

A moment that resonates with me in sneaker culture is the dad sneaker era that came into popularity during the lockdown in 2020. So many people were outraged to find these dad sneakers trending (which I found hilarious), but I was thrilled!

Comfort is very important to me and I loved embracing the trend, dad sneakers all the way!

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

I am currently loving the New Balance 530s, I wear them every day without hesitation! I own the sneakers in two colour ways and would love to collect them in more.

Other sneakers I have on rotation include the Nike AF1 Shadow, New Balance 990v5, and Nike Zoom Air Fire.

Please describe how it feels to you when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

Buying a new pair of kicks is one of the best feelings in the world! It is so exciting and fills me with so much joy.

No matter how many pairs of sneakers I have now, the feeling never gets old. I love to try them on as soon as I get home and start styling them with outfits. I do stress a bit during their first wear as I hate getting my shoes dirty and try my best to be extra cautious!

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

I would love to see an UGG x Adidas sneaker collaboration. I think it would be super cute!

I'm picturing neutral colours, fur-lined sneakers, cosy, teddy bear vibes.

What are some of your favorite creators/designers or brands and why?

One brand I am loving at the moment is Simon Miller. I love how they have taken luxury items and given them a playful and bold edge. I am obsessed with their shoes and handbags especially!

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not managed to acquire so far?

I would love to own a pair of Nike SB Dunk Low StrangeLove. They are gorgeous!

Other than kicks, what are some of your daily essentials or treasured items?

Besides sneakers, I love to accessorise with a handbag. I have a range of new and vintage handbags that I love wearing to elevate my look.
