Nica Reyes - Filipina Sneakerhead Interview

What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

Back when I was in high school, I always looked forward to wearing nicer shoes during PE class. This has eventually led to my love for sneakers starting with the Roshe Runs, Flyknits, Air Maxes, Janoskis, and Flyknit Maxes.

I would save up from my daily allowance of 200 to earn enough for my pair.

What’s one moment or trend in the history of sneaker culture that resonates with you?

Kanye’s Yeezy slides and foam runners trend deeply resonated with me because aside from its minimalistic design and uniqueness, he was able to combine high fashion.

For me, because of the foam runners' design, comfort, and versatility; make the Yeezy one of my go-to pairs. His vision is also unlike any other rapper’s vision when it comes to the shoe game.

Please describe how it feels to you when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

Whenever I get a new pair, I feel like an intense craving for food has been satisfied or a goal has been reached. Getting a new pair I have saved up for also makes me feel proud of myself because I know I deserve it. 💯

What are some of your favorite creators/designers or brands and why?

I want to support local by choosing MN+LA for providing everyday wear that can be dressed up or down. Also, the same day delivery is a plus! Accessibility is a big deal.

Shopcopper for the ladies and hautexstuff/HSO Brand for their 4 and 6-pocket jeans and cargo pants.

Most of these brands I mentioned have pieces that can be worn by both me and my boyfriend which I appreciate since we also share our clothes.

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

Two big brands such as New Balance with Nike/Adidas should come together or an A$AP Rocky + Nike collab.

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

New Balance, Air Jordans, Dunks, Foam runners, and Air Maxes.

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not managed to acquire so far?

My boyfriend and I have been eyeing the Lost and Founds.

Other than kicks, what are some of your daily essentials or treasured items?

Other than kicks, my style would not be complete with arm candy and earrings as well as a cap paired with my tote bag for casual days and my baguette bags for more formal occasions.

I also change my belly piercings depending on my outfit.
