Singaporean Sneakerhead and Dancer: Jewelyn Siew

What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

I can’t remember the exact moment I got drawn to sneakers. However, as a dancer, a good pair of sneakers often means the world to us. I explored and experimented with different brands to find the best pair of sneakers I could have for dance. If I had to identify the first pair of sneakers that triggered everything off, I’d say the OG Adidas Gazelle did. After that pair of shoes, I got addicted to finding comfy and stylish shoes.

What’s one moment or trend in the history of sneaker culture that resonates with you?

I think the Nike Dunks wave hit me the most. I first started with Nike Air Force. When I raffled my first pair of Nike Panda Dunks and put it on, I never went back! Still a lover of my Air Forces, but I’m looking forward to growing my Dunks collection further. My goal is to get them without spending bucks on resales.

Please describe how it feels to you when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

I feel like I could walk 50 kilometers more than usual. HAHA. A good pair of shoes bring you far, at least I believe. I feel empowered that I can put on a shoe that further elevates my dress sense, bringing out who I am. It’s a form of expression.

What are some of your favorite creators/designers or brands and why?

I’m a huge fan of Nike! The list never ends with Nike Air, Dunks, Jordans, and Blaze. Besides aesthetics and variety, Nike never fails to deliver comfort and durability. It’s amazing how they play around with designs while ensuring their iconic tick still stands out. New Balance, though; they are recently up-ing their game. I have been getting interested in their newer designs like 550 and 2022R.

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

I would wish for an Adidas and Nike collab, man! People always say never to wear Adidas and Nike together because we all know how big competitors they are. I cannot fathom what could come from the collaboration between Nike and Adidas. Which brand name to put first would already be a challenge.

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

My Nike Dunks and Converse Run Star hike trainer.

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not managed to acquire so far?‍

As basic as it sounds, I’d say the New Balance 550. It seems to be the potential to be my next favorite after Dunks.

Other than kicks, what are some of your daily essentials or treasured items?

BAGS BAGS BAGS. I can never have enough bags. Regarding styling, I feel our kicks and handbags play a huge part in adding that extra flavor to our outfit. It’s a package.
