Sneaker and Art Lover Megan Foo

Interviews

@maegzter is a sneaker and art lover from Singapore, and her favorite silhouette is the Air Jordan 1 both in the High and Low iterations. She loves the timeless, classic colorways like UNC or Mocha, as well as less-seen ones like Biohazard and Brotherhood.

What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

I’ve always been a sneaker-type of girl! Growing up, I recall having all sorts of sneakers: Converses or Levi’s for school shoes; Adidas Superstars or Nike high-tops for casual wear; Janoskis for skatewear. However, getting back into sneakers again was pure serendipity. In September last year, I sent a Pinterest photo of the Jordan 1 (AJ1) Seafoam to a friend, raved about how cute it was, and he proceeded to get it for me as a birthday gift. I had it in hand, fell in love with it, and now I have a (growing) collection of Jordan 1s. Till this day, my mom still tells me that’s her favourite pair in my collection.

What are some of your observations or personal stories when it comes to collecting kicks?

I think sneakers lace people together. They become more than shoes when they have sentimental value or are attached to a common personal story. My sneakerhead friends almost always fondly recall their first pair of kicks that got them started on their own sneaker journey - it’s the same for me!

At the heart of it, the sneakers that I own and collect are opportunities for me to (re)connect with others and create shared memories. In my group of friends, we buy shoes as presents for one another*, lament how expensive shoes are getting because of reseller prices, have running jokes about having our own #AJgang, to even wearing matching Jordans to show we’re the epitome of friendship goals!

* P.S. We always make sure to transfer $8.88 back to each other so we don’t fall prey to the curse of walking out of each other's lives!

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

My collection is mostly made up of Nike AJ1 Highs or Lows. I love how they look on me and how versatile they are when it comes to outfit pairings!

My AJ1s usually fall into two colourway categories: timeless, classic staples (like the 2014 Black White, UNC, or Mocha) or less-seen, creative colourways (like the Biohack, Volt Gold, or Brotherhood). While classic staples make for hassle-free pairings, the bolder colourways are what really pushes me to create my own style!

Other than Jordan 1s, I’m trying to expand my collection to include Jordan 4s (especially the Shimmer and the Sashiko)!

Can you please describe how it feels to you when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

Excited, in general! Since I’m drawn to kicks with interesting designs or colourways, the first thing I typically do is to think of outfits that can best suit my new addition. Occasionally, with an expensive pair, my heart breaks a little knowing that it’s about to get creased with wear – even then, I think the creases on my shoes tell stories of my adventures!

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

Fine Art type collaborations with the Jordan brand! Although much of the history behind the Jordan brand comes from Basketball, the brand has had many interesting, creative collaborations with other brands, artists, and creators – so why not with museums? I think it could be an interesting angle – a museum collection. Imagine having Claude Monet’s waterlilies or Edgas Degas’ ballerinas on your Jordans…

Another interesting angle would be to subvert existing collaborations – like ice cream brand collaborations. Everyone’s going to cite the Ben & Jerry’s Dunk at this point, but I’m thinking… shoes in ice cream flavours. We can subvert the notion of shoe “bites” and “bite” these shoes back by biting into ice creams inspired by classic Jordan colourways. What would Seafoam / Volt Gold ice cream taste like? What would UNC ice cream taste like? I’ll leave that up to your imagination.

Which pair of kicks are under-rated, in your opinion?

The shoe that comes to mind is the AJ1 Marina Blue - only because it was heavily compared to the AJ1 Royals (worth about $700 today and similar in colourway) but didn’t sell out on SNKRS and the prices bricked upon release.

My hot take? TheMarina Blue is more wearable. Since the hue of the Marina Blue has a bit of a green tinge (making it a different shade of blue as the Royals), it makes it a little easier to match with the wardrobe that I have.

Just like we’ve seen with the Shadows 2.0s or the SBB 2.0s, I do wonder, though, if this pair was heralded and released as the Royals 2.0, could it have become a musthave in one’s collection? I guess we’ll never know.

What are some of your favourite creators/designers or brands and why?

Dior - I think there’s something about the simplicity of the brand aesthetic and the craftsmanship that I really love. Other than that then maybe brands I grew up with that also build community in their own right like Lego, or Pokémon.

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not managed to acquire so far?

The AJ1 Rookie of the Year (ROTY)! I love the colourway on this particular pair because it looks like a Timberland x Jordan collab. The brown resembles the iconic Timberland Nubuck so much. Since Timberlands are another shoe staple in my fashion arsenal, I love that this pair brings both my favourite shoe looks in a single design.

What are some of your favorite sneaker related content creators?

Recently, I’ve been getting interested in shoe cleaning and restoration – so YouTube videos from the RESHOEVN8R team, or videos from Nick Bennett (@vtgheat) on TikTok are on my watch list.

Style creators wise, I love Rachael (@sriracha.el) and Dymon (@_caribbean_papi_)! Both are quite different from each other, but I love that they really own how they match their kicks with their own personal fashion styles.

Other than kicks, what are some of your daily essentials or treasured items?

My stringed instrument collection! I have 3 guitars, 2 ukuleles, and 1 mandolin, which are all precious to me!

Where can people find you on social media?

I’ve just started getting into sneaker content, but most of my regular content is around making the study of art easy and accessible. If you have any ideas on what kind of sneaker content you’d like to see, readers can get in touch with me on Instagram or TikTok @maegzter :)
