Interviews

Zhen Xing' @zx_starwalker's first pair of sneakers is the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG 'Gym Red', and sneaker culture introduces him to folks of different ages and cultures. He loves Travis Scott/Cactus Jack designs and is always looking for hyped sneakers.

What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

My first pair of sneakers was the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG 'Gym Red'. When you unbox your first pair of retro sneakers, you get that odd feeling of enthusiasm.

It felt as if you'd become a part of the larger community; you're now a part of it.

What’s one moment or trend in the history of sneaker culture that resonates with you?

Sneaker culture is popular throughout all ages and connects everyone!

The famous Air Jordan 1 'Chicago' is still well known today, just like it was back in the day. I've met folks of different ages who knew the history and culture of a certain pair of sneakers or colorway.

Culture and history are passed down through the generations and spread among family and friends. I believe this speaks to me strongly because I find myself influencing my family and friends to get sneakers. It's always good to see a silhouette, whether it's a hype or a general release.

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

I am an avid fan of the Air Jordan 1, and that's what got me started.

I have at least four pairs of the Air Jordan 1,those are: Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG 'Lost & Found', Fragment Design x Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Retro Low, A Ma Maniere x Air Jordan 1 High OG 'Airness', and even an Air Jordan 1 Low 'Wolf Grey'. Off-White x Air Jordan 2 Retro Low SP 'White Varsity Red' and Nike Off-White x Blazer Low 'White University Red' are also in the rotation.

Also included are a pair of Yeezy Boost 350 V2 'Zebra', which is an iconic colorway of that sneaker type. Not forgotten are my Nike Dunk Low SB 'J-Pack Chicago', which is a go-to pair for any casual occasion.

Please describe how it feels when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

Wearing a fresh pair of sneakers is exactly like wearing out your personality. I believe that the sneaker you wear reflects your personality, fashion sense, and knowledge of sneaker culture.

I have a habit of unpacking a brand new pair of sneakers on some special day (for example, my birthday), which makes each first wear an exciting and wonderful experience. I'll never get over the sensation of carefully sliding your feet in and lacing them.

Maybe I'm a hype beast sneakerhead, but one thing to bear in mind is that sneakers are still sneakers, and it's a shame to keep them on shelves. Wear your kicks!!!

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

I don't have any brand collaborations to refer to, but that's the best part.

When new brands combine, it adds an air of surprise and excitement about what could happen. Building up the story, much like watching leaks/rumors to trailers before each blockbuster, adds to the climax feeling of eventually holding the sneaker in hand.

What are some of your favorite creators/designers or brands and why?

I've always liked Travis Scott/Cactus Jack designs. To be honest, I am a hype beast, so I am naturally drawn to any hyped-up sneakers.

But the designer never fails to create a fresh silhouette, whether it's the Jordan 1 to 4 and 6, or even the Air Force 1 and SB Dunks. If possible, I'd like to get the full collection!

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not acquired so far?

That pair will most likely be the OFF-WHITE x Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG 'Chicago'

Other than kicks, what are some of your daily essentials or treasured items?

As a complement to sneakers, I think collaborative streetwear capsules are necessary. It completes the outfit while staying true to my aesthetic.

They are usually well-designed, and you can wear them even when you are not wearing sneakers.

Where can people find you on social media?
