What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

I remember being drawn to well-made things since I was a toddler, and recall very specific colours, textures and weights of materials - it could be anything at all; my uncle's utility spade for digging for worms to fish with, pencils, furniture joint lines, towels, paper. My mom is a practical lady and never entertained sneakers - buying outside of necessity (with good reason).

My first pair were the Nike Air Max 95 OG in orange. I was beyond grateful, and boy I treated them like gold. I still remember the first time I touched the squeaky bubble bit! Insane. Definitely wore those to the ground. I've always admired good design in every form- well planned and executed thought truly are a thing of beauty.

What’s one moment or trend in the history of sneaker culture that resonates with you?

I think the uprising of sneaker collaboration culture way back when (hello Stussy x Nike Huarache) definitely changed the game for new approaches to storytelling, to hype and to community outreach. I enjoy listening to the people behind the brands- how their minds work, how value is allocated and how specific systems in the workplace help the team to grow and evolve! Fascinating stuff.

I also enjoy customization culture- really love how everyone anywhere can flesh out an idea. With the age of the internet and social media, the reach and possibilities are massive.

Please describe how it feels to you when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

Feels good putting on new sneakers! Like a kid at Christmas for sure. The smell of a fresh shoe is on par with the smell of a fresh book. Haha! That being said, I honestly don't feel the need to own every design I fancy. It's pretty exciting for me to just look at the product and think about how it was conceived and constructed.

What are some of your favorite creators/designers or brands and why?

Again, too many to name from every discipline. Nike, Nicole Mclaughlin, Cai Gui Qiang, Es Devlin. The list is never ending!

I think these brands and creatives behind the brand/their brand of art excite me because they seem to constantly be breaking their own boundaries and making the wildest ideas a reality - regardless of how tough it's going to be, or how seemingly impossible it is to achieve. Insanely inspiring and heartening watching amazing pieces come to life.

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

Gosh, there are far too many to name. There are so many amazing people out there, creatives in every shape and form - with the most impactful ideas.

Off the top of my head, Salehe Bembury or Olafur Eliasson for Nike would be fun! Would be exciting to see some fresh shoe shapes and silhouettes! Love when people from different disciplines come together to make magic.

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

Because I'm an artist who works with varying mediums and occasionally at massive scale, I'm usually on my feet at some construction site making murals or at the production workshop and require extremely comfy shoes, if they're not safety ones.

My forever faves are the Nike Air Max Tuned/Plus, Nike ACG React Terra Gobe, the classic AF1s and the wonderfully reliable Nike Huaraches - I have them in so many colourways, and love that they were inspired by sandals. I've also been wearing my Beams x Crocs (All-Terrain) to death - the ridiculous giant pouches attached to them always make people smile.

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not managed to acquire so far?

There are so many that are perfect. Really enjoy the Sean Wotherspoon Air Max 1/97 or the Nike CMFM Flea 1. Be still, my heart!

Other than kicks, what are some of your daily essentials or treasured items?

All I need is my laptop, tablet and phone - even all that can be replaced, really. Just happy I'm able-bodied, healthy, doing what I love and surrounded with loved ones. Life is good!
