Joel Kiam - Singaporean Sneakerhead Interview

What was the moment you first got drawn to sneakers, and which pair of sneakers triggered your passion?

It was when my style started to change over the years! I have been into a comfy/minimalist style lately.

I believe sneakers always play a big part in the comfort of overall outfits. The New Balance 574 (especially the grey colorway) is definitely comfortable and easy to match with any fit too! 

‍What’s one moment or trend in the history of sneaker culture that resonates with you?

The rise of wider pant styles paired with dad sneakers resonates a lot with me.

Please describe how it feels to you when you get and wear a new pair of kicks?

I feel confident and stylish, period! Confidence is key, by the way!

I always feel excited to wear it out as soon as I get it so I can show them off to the world.

What are some of your favorite creators/designers or brands and why?

I admire Jun Takahashi of Undercover. His pieces and designs are unconventional and sophisticated.

What is one sneaker collaboration that doesn’t exist, but you wish/think should exist?

Definitely, Sur8ery x Nike would be lit!

What are some of the current pairs of sneakers in your rotation?

As of now, it is New Balance, ASICS, Converse, Demonia, and Dr. Martens are in my rotation. 

What is your ultimate holy grail sneaker that you have not managed to acquire so far?

Ah, man!! I have many dream sneakers on my wish list, but on top of that is definitely JJJound x New Balance and/or Undercover by Jun Takahashi.

Other than kicks, what are some of your daily essentials or treasured items?

The Glossier 'You' perfume and headphones are my essentials.
